The Golden AgeThe 70's. An era with shockingly good X-rated films; films that could match mainstream films in quality. Porn films in the 70's actually had scripts: they had plots, they were shot on 35mm by talented directors of photography and had capable directors. They were serious, smart, funny, looked good and they had music. Some had really good music.Jay Phillips and Lon Osgood were young songwriting partners. They planned to be the next Lennon & McCartney. But then, Jay lost his keys. So before they could become famous, they first had to go to the office where Jay's roommate worked as security guard for a guy who made porn movies. While they were in the lobby retrieving the keys, prolific porn producer and director Stu Segall stormed out of his office saying "I need someone who can write music!". Lon and Jay sheepishly raised their hands and said "we write music." Segall: "I've got $900 for music for a film." Their eyes lit up; 900 bucks was a lot of money at that time, especially for these two. Noting their response, Segall thought quickly and said "for two films!" Hell, $900 was still a lot of money. They took the gig.Lon and Jay, as "Lonjohn Productions", ended up scoring a dozen X-rated films and writing dozens of songs for them. Producers loved them because they wrote real songs with lyrics and great melodies. Not the usual bump and grind stuff. Their songs were often hilarious (they introduced singing chipmunks to porn), sometimes more serious, and always solid songwriting.
Now, some fifty years later, Lon has dug out the safety masters of the studio recordings from the films. He's spent hours upon hours in the studio cleaning them up, digitizing them and is in the process of remastering the songs. These songs have never been heard outside of the films they were in. And unless you happen to have a video or DVD of one of the films, they've never been heard by the public at large either!Take a listen to highlights from a few of the songs below!
